Pilgrimage Church and Franciscan Friary – Csíksomlyó
A csíksomlyói Sarlós Boldogasszony-kegytemplom és ferences kolostor a magyarság egyik legismertebb búcsújáró helye. Csíkszereda határában, a Kissomlyó-hegy lábánál áll, és évente több százezer zarándokot fogad.
The first Gothic church and the small monastery that stands next to it were built between 1442 and 1448 with the support of John Hunyadi. The church was burned down by invading Turkish-Tatar armies in 1661, but the community restored it by 1664.
The construction of the two-tower Baroque church today began in 1804 based on the plans of Schmidt Konstantin; its towers were completed by 1830, and it was consecrated in 1876. Pope Pius XII elevated it to the rank of basilica (basilica minor) in 1948.

The temple’s greatest treasure is a Renaissance statue of Mary, carved from hornbeam by an unknown master in the early 16th century, which was recognized as miraculous by Ignác Batthyány, the Transylvanian bishop in 1798. The highlights of the furnishings include the pulpit from 1835, the main altar from 1876, the glass windows from 1905, and the 2,824 pipe organ built in 1931 by the Wegenstein workshop in Temesvár.
A kolostor a székelyföldi művelődéstörténet fontos helyszíne is: itt működött a ferencesek nyomdája, ahol 1676-ban Kájoni János nevezetes énekeskönyve, a Cantionale Catholicum is megjelent.
Goodbyes. A kegytemplom titulusünnepe július 2., Sarlós Boldogasszony napja. Legnagyobb ünnepe a pünkösdi búcsú, amelynek ünnepi szentmiséjét pünkösd szombatján tartják a Kis- és Nagysomlyó közötti nyeregben. A hagyomány a búcsú eredetét az 1567-es tolvajos-tetői csatához köti; a történészek ezt legendának tartják, a zarándoklat azonban évszázadok óta élő gyakorlat. 2019. június 1-jén Ferenc pápa is itt mutatott be szentmisét. A szabadtéri Hármashalom-oltár Makovecz Imre tervei alapján épült, a pünkösdi búcsút pedig 2020-ban hungarikummá nyilvánították.
