Franciscan Friary – Mikháza

A mikházi ferences kolostor és a Szent István király tiszteletére szentelt templom a Nyárád mentén, Nyárádremete községhez tartozó Mikházán áll. Alapítása a katolikus megújulás erdélyi történetéhez kötődik.

1630-ban az Erdélyi Katolikus Státus a bosnyák ferences rendtartománytól kért szerzeteseket, 1635-ben pedig Tholdalagi Mihály marosszéki főkapitány házat és telket vásárolt számukra.

During the tenure of János Kájoni, from 1666 onwards, the old monastery was replaced with a multi-story stone building, and the chapel was expanded into a church. The church was completed in 1678 – as evidenced by the inscription on the west facade – and was consecrated in 1692 with five altars. The late Renaissance building is adorned with sgraffito decoration and stone carvings of rare beauty in Transylvania.

For more than a century, from 1669 onwards, a secondary school operated in the monastery. Beneath the church there is a double crypt, the walls of which are adorned with memorial plaques of the Torma and Bornemisza families in memory of their patrons. In 1949, the Franciscans had to leave the monastery.

Mikháza ma a Mária Út egyik fontos állomása és kiindulópontja.

Visit: It is worth arranging an on-site visit in advance; a virtual tour of the monastery is also available on the Visit Mures website. For more information about the pilgrimage routes: On the way – Pilgrimage routes of Szeklerland.
