The church was damaged several times by a series of earthquakes. Originally, the church was surrounded by two walls - a ring of fortifications - and had two towers. The outer wall was demolished by the parish in 1786 and these stones were used to build, by order of Joseph II, a building intended for the German school, which stands next to the bell tower and is now used as a cantorial lacquer. In the cinerarium of the church, we can find the graves of several prominent figures associated with the name of Sfântu Gheorghe: among others, the mayors Bálint Császár and Ferenc Gödri and József Málik, the founding editor of the Székely Nemzet daily newspaper, are buried here. The obelisk of József Váradi and Ferenc Bartalis, martyrs of 1848, was re-erected here. The cemetery arch of the monument is surrounded by a number of headstones. The first one was erected in 1983 by Mikós alumni who graduated in 1943. Since then, the number of these headstones has grown to more than 70, commemorating the deceased teachers and students of the Székely Mikó College.

The church probably acquired its present late Gothic form in 1547, when it was rebuilt at the expense of Patron Paul Daczo.
