The Armenian Catholic church of Gyergy\u00f3szentmikl\u00f3s preserves the memory of the Armenian merchants who settled here in the 17th century. The Baroque church, dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, is surrounded by a loopholed stone wall and two octagonal bastions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Armenians settled in the town in the second half of the 17th century and at first held their services in private houses. In 1712 they bought the old Gothic chapel; the present church was built on its site between 1730 and 1733, and the tower was completed in 1734. Bishop Antal Bajtay consecrated it in 1772. The loopholed wall around the church was built in 1748.<\/p>\n

The four altars and the pulpit were made between 1752 and 1754. Its most valuable painting is the north side altarpiece showing St Gregory the Illuminator baptising King Tiridates III: it was painted in 1752 at the Mekhitarist monastery in Venice and restored in 2025. The neo-Baroque ceiling frescoes and the stained-glass windows were added during a late 19th-century renovation.<\/p>\n

The niches of the enclosure wall once held an 18th-century Way of the Cross carved in wooden relief; the originals were removed for safety in 1978, and photographs have stood in their place since 2004. The church is still an Armenian-rite parish today. Its feast is held on the Nativity of Mary, 8 September, or the nearest Sunday, with an Armenian-rite liturgy.<\/p>\n

Visiting:<\/strong> the church stands in the north-eastern part of the town, beside the road to Lake Gyilkos (Red Lake). The parish provides information about visits (Pet\u0151fi S\u00e1ndor t\u00e9r 4).<\/p>\n
