With its painted coffered ceiling and separate wooden bell tower, the Gothic Reformed church of Chetfalva (Csetfalva), near Berehove, is one of the finest monuments of Transcarpathia. The vast majority of the villagers are Hungarian.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to recent research, the stone church was built in the 15th century. By 1645 a flourishing Reformed congregation lived in the village, and the church was reconsecrated at that time.<\/p>\n

The ceiling of the nave is divided into sixty coffers of slightly different sizes and shapes, painted by the joiner Ferenc L\u00e1ndor in 1753; he also decorated the ceiling of the sanctuary in 1773.<\/p>\n

In front of the church entrance stands the thirty-metre wooden bell tower with four corner turrets, built in 1796, which recalls the form of medieval defensive towers; its ground floor serves as the gate to the churchyard. The church is a monument of national importance in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Visiting:<\/strong> Chetfalva lies about 15 km from Berehove. To visit the church, enquire in advance with the local Reformed congregation. Before travelling, check the current travel advice of your foreign ministry.<\/p>\n
