A one-day pilgrimage drive linking three great sacred sites of the Cs\u00edk and Gyergy\u00f3 basins. It starts at Cs\u00edksomly\u00f3, the shrine of the Whitsun pilgrimage, passes the fortified church of Cs\u00edkkarcfalva \u2013 the one with the highest walls in Cs\u00edk \u2013 and ends at the Franciscan friary of Gyergy\u00f3sz\u00e1rhegy, home of J\u00e1nos K\u00e1joni, the great Franciscan scholar of the 17th century.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n

    Pilgrimage Church and Franciscan Friary \u2013 Cs\u00edksomly\u00f3<\/a><\/h3>\n

    The Pilgrimage Church of Our Lady of the Visitation is one of the best-known Hungarian places of pilgrimage, welcoming several hundred thousand pilgrims a year. The present twin-towered Baroque church was built between 1804 and 1876 and has been a basilica since 1948. Its greatest treasure is the 227-centimetre statue of the Virgin Mary carved from lime wood in the early 16th century.<\/p>\n

    It is worth walking up to the saddle between the two Somly\u00f3 hills, where the open-air Mass of the Whitsun pilgrimage is held.<\/p>\n

    Fortified Church \u2013 Cs\u00edkkarcfalva<\/a><\/h3>\n

    The Church of the Assumption stands on a hill above the village, encircled by an oval defensive wall some eight metres high \u2013 the tallest of all the fortified churches of Cs\u00edk. A covered wall-walk with loopholes runs around the wall, and the Gothic sanctuary dates from the 15th century.<\/p>\n

    To see the interior, it is best to arrange a visit with the parish in advance.<\/p>\n

    Franciscan Friary \u2013 Gyergy\u00f3sz\u00e1rhegy<\/a><\/h3>\n

    Standing on the slope of Sz\u00e1rm\u00e1ny Hill above the L\u00e1z\u00e1r Castle, the friary is one of the oldest sacred ensembles of the Gyergy\u00f3 Basin. It was here that J\u00e1nos K\u00e1joni, the 17th-century Transylvanian Franciscan scholar, organ builder and music collector, lived and died in 1687.<\/p>\n

    The church can be visited during Mass or by prior arrangement.<\/p>\n
