The Sz\u00e9kely people of Cs\u00edk, Gyergy\u00f3 and K\u00e1szon remained Catholic; in H\u00e1romsz\u00e9k Catholic and Reformed villages alternate; Marossz\u00e9k has many Reformed communities, while the Homor\u00f3d and Nyik\u00f3 valleys and Erd\u0151vid\u00e9k are home to many Unitarians. The rule is not without exceptions \u2013 many medieval churches have been used by more than one denomination over the centuries \u2013 but it is a good guide.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pg-vt-harom pg-fk-ket\">\n<div><span class=\"pg-vt-k-cim\">Roman Catholic<\/span><span class=\"pg-vt-k-szoveg\">A cross on top of the tower. Inside: an altar, altarpieces and statues, a sanctuary lamp burning beside the tabernacle, the Stations of the Cross on the walls and a holy water font at the entrance.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"pg-vt-k-cim\">Reformed<\/span><span class=\"pg-vt-k-szoveg\">The tower is often topped with a star or a rooster. Inside there are no altarpieces or statues: the pulpit and the communion table stand at the centre, and the decoration comes from the painted coffered ceiling and the carved pulpit canopy.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"pg-vt-k-cim\">Unitarian<\/span><span class=\"pg-vt-k-szoveg\">The interior is as plain as a Reformed one: pulpit, communion table, gallery and often a painted coffered ceiling. Their creed, \u201cGod is one\u201d, can even be read in Sz\u00e9kely runic script at \u00c9nlaka; medieval murals uncovered from under the plaster are preserved as heritage.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"pg-vt-k-cim\">Armenian Catholic<\/span><span class=\"pg-vt-k-szoveg\">A Catholic church celebrating the Armenian rite. Armenian saints appear among the Baroque furnishings: in Gyergy\u00f3szentmikl\u00f3s the most valuable painting shows St Gregory the Illuminator, who converted Armenia to Christianity.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"tovabbi\">Other communities<\/h2>\n<h3>Lutherans<\/h3>\n<p>Of the received religions of Transylvania, the Evangelical Lutheran Church is the smallest in Sz\u00e9kely Land. Most Hungarian Lutherans live in the neighbouring Barcas\u00e1g, in the Cs\u00e1ng\u00f3 villages of H\u00e9tfalu near Brass\u00f3; in Covasna County 851 people declared themselves Lutheran in 2011. Their church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Romania, has been independent since 1920 and is based in Kolozsv\u00e1r.<\/p>\n<h3>Orthodox and Greek Catholics<\/h3>\n<p>The Romanian communities of the region are mostly Orthodox. The Orthodox Diocese of Covasna and Harghita was founded in 1994; its seat is Cs\u00edkszereda, home to the Cathedral of St Nicholas. A small number of Greek Catholics also live in the area.<\/p>\n<h3>Sabbatarians \u2013 B\u00f6z\u00f6d\u00fajfalu<\/h3>\n<p>The Sabbatarian movement arose among the Unitarians in 1588 and is linked to Andr\u00e1s E\u0151ssi and Simon P\u00e9chi. Its followers were persecuted in the 17th century; their last community lived in B\u00f6z\u00f6d\u00fajfalu, today in Mure\u0219 County, where many converted to Judaism from 1868 onwards and several were deported in 1944.<\/p>\n<p>The villagers were relocated when work on a reservoir began in the 1980s, and the houses were flooded between 1992 and 1994. The tower of the old church collapsed into the lake in 2014. Former residents and their descendants gather in the memorial park on the shore on the first Saturday of August.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"latogatoknak\">For visitors<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"pg-vt-etikett\">\n<li>On Sunday mornings most churches hold Mass or a service: you are welcome as a guest of the community, but it is not the time for sightseeing.<\/li>\n<li>On weekdays many village churches are locked. Ask for the key at the parish office, the minister\u2019s office or from the church warden; contact details are collected on our Parishes and congregations page.<\/li>\n<li>Holy Communion and the Lord\u2019s Supper are for members of the community. If you are unsure of the custom, simply stay in your seat \u2013 no one will take offence.<\/li>\n<li>In many village churches men and women still traditionally sit apart: have a look around before you take a seat.<\/li>\n<li>Take photographs outside services and with permission.
