By tradition, the Whitsun pilgrimage commemorates an event of 1567, when the Sz\u00e9kely people of Cs\u00edk defended their Catholic faith. Since then pilgrims have come every year on Whit Saturday \u2013 many on foot, walking in procession behind the banners of their villages.<\/p>\n<p>The shrine\u2019s greatest treasure is a 2.27-metre statue of the Virgin Mary carved from lime wood in the early 16th century, recognised by the Church as miraculous in 1798. The festive Mass is celebrated in the saddle above the church, at the H\u00e1rmashalom Altar designed by Imre Makovecz and completed in 1996. Pope Francis celebrated Mass here on 1 June 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pg-vt-gomb-sor\"><a class=\"pg-ut-gomb pg-ut-gomb-vilagos\" href=\"https:\/\/peregrinus.hu\/en\/secrets-of-csiksomlyo-pilgrimage\/\">The full history of the pilgrimage<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"program\">The programme<\/h2>\n<p>The pilgrimage runs from Friday to Whit Monday. The schedule below shows the 2026 programme, as recent years have been very similar. The shrine publishes the 2027 times in the weeks before the pilgrimage, and we will update them here. Many pilgrims also climb Little Somly\u00f3 before dawn on Whit Sunday to watch the sunrise from there. This is a folk tradition, not part of the official programme.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"odajutas\">Getting there<\/h2>\n<div class=\"pg-vt-harom pg-cs-utak\">\n<div><span class=\"pg-vt-k-cim\">By pilgrim train<\/span><span class=\"pg-vt-k-szoveg\">Pilgrim trains leave Hungary for the pilgrimage every year. The Sz\u00e9kely Gyors and the Cs\u00edksomly\u00f3 Expressz, organised by M\u00c1V and the K\u00e1rp\u00e1teur\u00f3pa travel agency, run with a four-day programme \u2013 in 2026 from 22 to 25 May. Pilgrimage guides accompany the passengers.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"pg-vt-k-cim\">By car<\/span><span class=\"pg-vt-k-szoveg\">Cs\u00edksomly\u00f3 is roughly 700 kilometres from Budapest \u2013 a long day\u2019s drive. The most common route runs via Oradea, Cluj-Napoca and T\u00e2rgu Mure\u0219, then on to Miercurea Ciuc via Odorheiu Secuiesc. In Romania an electronic road vignette (rovinieta) is required on national roads as well.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"pg-vt-k-cim\">By coach or scheduled train<\/span><span class=\"pg-vt-k-szoveg\">Many parishes and travel agencies organise coach pilgrimages; coaches stop at designated places on the edge of town. Miercurea Ciuc can also be reached by scheduled train from Bra\u0219ov. The nearest airports are in T\u00e2rgu Mure\u0219 and Bra\u0219ov.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"parkolas\">Parking and local transport<\/h2>\n<p>During the pilgrimage, the streets of Miercurea Ciuc leading to Cs\u00edksomly\u00f3 are closed. In 2026 only vehicles with a permit could enter from 10 pm on Friday until 6 pm on Saturday, and you cannot drive up to the Saddle. The organisers ask everyone who can to park on the edge of town and continue on foot.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"pg-vt-etikett\">\n<li><b>Coming from Bra\u0219ov,<\/b> park along the Bra\u0219ov road (Strada Bra\u0219ovului); the police direct coaches to their places.<\/li>\n<li><b>Coming from Odorheiu Secuiesc,<\/b> areas beyond the railway tracks are opened for parking, mainly for coaches and cars.<\/li>\n<li><b>Coming from Gheorgheni and Ghime\u0219,<\/b> use the large car parks on the edge of town or the areas at \u0218oimeni, P\u0103uleni-Ciuc and Delni\u021ba.<\/li>\n<li><b>Local buses:<\/b> more frequent services run on Saturday outside the closed zone, and on Sunday also on the road up to Cs\u00edksomly\u00f3, to help older pilgrims.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"pg-fk-megjegyzes\">The city of Miercurea Ciuc publishes the parking arrangements before the pilgrimage every year. The details above reflect the 2026 arrangements.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"szallas\">Accommodation<\/h2>\n<p>For the pilgrimage weekend, accommodation in Miercurea Ciuc and the surrounding villages is often fully booked months ahead, so it is worth booking in the autumn or winter. If you cannot find a place in town, look in the villages of Cs\u00edk, in B\u0103ile Tu\u0219nad or in Odorheiu Secuiesc, and allow for the daily journey. Appear as a recommended partner in the pilgrimage guide.<\/span><span class=\"pg-partner-cta-gomb\">For partners<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"csomag\">What to bring<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"pg-vt-etikett\">\n<li><b>A raincoat or umbrella and layers.<\/b> In the Saddle you may get both sunshine and cold rain, and it is chilly at dawn and in the evening.<\/li>\n<li><b>Comfortable, closed shoes.<\/b> You will stand on grassy, sloping ground that can be slippery after rain.<\/li>\n<li><b>Water, food and sun protection<\/b> for the whole day: a hat and sunscreen.<\/li>\n<li><b>A sitting mat or a small folding stool.<\/b> Many people wait for hours before the festive Mass.<\/li>\n<li><b>An ID card or passport, a European Health Insurance Card<\/b> and some cash in lei.<\/li>\n<li><b>A charged phone and a power bank.<\/b> In the crowd, an agreed meeting point helps a lot if you get separated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"pg-fk-megjegyzes\">In 2026 the organisers reported that bears had been seen more often around Little Somly\u00f3. Stay on the marked routes and do not leave food behind.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"csoportok\">For groups<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"pg-vt-etikett\">\n<li>The police direct coaches to designated places on the edge of town.
