Frequently Asked Questions
Larger town churches and shrines – Csíksomlyó, for example – are usually open during the day. Village churches and fortified churches are often locked: the key is frequently kept at the parish office or by a caretaker living near the church, whose contact details are often posted on the gate. It is worth phoning ahead – we have collected the contact details on our Church Communities page.
There is usually no entrance fee for churches, but at several historic churches – especially for guided visits – a donation or small contribution towards upkeep is requested. It is worth carrying some cash (Romanian lei) for this.
When visiting a church, clothing that covers shoulders and knees is a sign of respect. During services avoid walking around and talking loudly; if a Mass or service is in progress, wait until it ends before looking around.
In many places, yes – but it is not appropriate during services, and in some churches flash photography is not permitted, mainly to protect painted ceilings and murals. If in doubt, ask the caretaker or the minister.
The Whitsun pilgrimage – on 15 May 2027, the Saturday before Pentecost – is the greatest experience, but it draws huge crowds. For a quieter visit, choose a weekday or the titular feast of the church, 2 July. More: The Secrets of Csíksomlyó.
On every featured site's page you will find a Route planning button that shows the route from your location on Google Maps. For pilgrimages of several days, see the Pilgrimage Routes page for ideas and tips on preparation.
