Unitarian Fortified Church – Nagyajta

The Unitarian Church in Nagyajta is the oldest architectural and art history ensemble in the settlement. According to documents, the church, surrounded by a 5 m high wall and protected by two bastions, was built in the second half of the XVI century or at the beginning of the XVII century on the highest point of the settlement, the hill called „Varjúfészek”. The church in the inner courtyard of the fortress is a late Gothic church with a mesh vaulting. Its most valuable elements are the chalice-shaped pulpit, which is composed of four stone-carved caskets, and the boundary stone dating from 1710. In terms of its age, it is considered the sixth oldest chalice in Transylvania. More important repairs were carried out in the 1990s: in 1993 the gate tower was renovated, and between 2000 and 2002 the north-west tower was restored. In 2019–2021, the entire complex was restored. During the restoration, a mural depicting the legend of Saint Ladislaus was also discovered.
