Unitarian Fortified Church – Nagyajta
The Unitarian fortified church of Nagyajta is the village's oldest architectural and art-historical ensemble. According to documents, the church fortress – surrounded by a 5-metre wall and defended by two bastions – was built on the village's highest point, the hill known as “Varjúfészek” (Crow's Nest), in the second half of the 16th century and the early 17th century. In the inner courtyard stands the 14th-century late Gothic church with net vaulting. Its most valuable features are the chalice-shaped pulpit, assembled from four carved stone panels, and the carved stone balustrade of 1710. It is considered the sixth oldest pulpit in Transylvania. Major repairs became possible in the 1990s: the gate tower was renovated in 1993 and the north-west tower restored between 2000 and 2002. Between 2019 and 2021 the whole ensemble was restored, and during the work a mural depicting the legend of St Ladislaus was discovered.
