A one-day pilgrimage drive linking three great sacred sites of the Csík and Gyergyó basins. It starts at Csíksomlyó, the shrine of the Whitsun pilgrimage, passes the fortified church of Csíkkarcfalva – the one with the highest walls in Csík – and ends at the Franciscan friary of Gyergyószárhegy, home of János Kájoni, the great Franciscan scholar of the 17th century.

Pilgrimage Church and Franciscan Friary – Csíksomlyó
The Pilgrimage Church of Our Lady of the Visitation is one of the best-known Hungarian places of pilgrimage, welcoming several hundred thousand pilgrims a year. The present twin-towered Baroque church was built between 1804 and 1876 and has been a basilica since 1948. Its greatest treasure is the 227-centimetre statue of the Virgin Mary carved from lime wood in the early 16th century.
It is worth walking up to the saddle between the two Somlyó hills, where the open-air Mass of the Whitsun pilgrimage is held.

Fortified Church – Csíkkarcfalva
The Church of the Assumption stands on a hill above the village, encircled by an oval defensive wall some eight metres high – the tallest of all the fortified churches of Csík. A covered wall-walk with loopholes runs around the wall, and the Gothic sanctuary dates from the 15th century.
To see the interior, it is best to arrange a visit with the parish in advance.

Franciscan Friary – Gyergyószárhegy
Standing on the slope of Szármány Hill above the Lázár Castle, the friary is one of the oldest sacred ensembles of the Gyergyó Basin. It was here that János Kájoni, the 17th-century Transylvanian Franciscan scholar, organ builder and music collector, lived and died in 1687.
The church can be visited during Mass or by prior arrangement.
Good to know
- Start at Csíksomlyó in the morning, so you can comfortably reach Gyergyószárhegy by the end of the day.
- Some village churches are kept locked: it is worth arranging your visit with the parish or ministry office a day or two in advance.
- In church, clothing covering shoulders and knees is appropriate; please do not take photos during services.
- At Whitsun, traffic around Csíksomlyó is very heavy – it is best to set aside a separate day for the pilgrimage.
- In Gyergyószárhegy, the Lázár Castle below the friary is also worth a stroll.
