Transcarpathia is the westernmost region of Ukraine, where a significant Hungarian community still lives along the Tisza and around Berehove (Beregszász).
Its Catholic churches of Gothic origin, Reformed churches with painted coffered ceilings and the Greek Catholic tradition – led by the cathedral of Uzhhorod (Ungvár) – together give the region its distinctive religious character.
