Háromszék Fortified Churches Route

The churches of Háromszék recall the age of Ottoman and Tatar raids: church fortresses guarded by walls and bastions, medieval murals and painted coffered ceilings. The route starts in Nagyajta, leads through Sepsiszentgyörgy and Dálnok to Gelence, and ends at the Franciscan friary of Esztelnek. It is easy to split over two days.

Stops along the route

  1. 1

    Unitarian Fortified Church – Nagyajta

Surrounded by a 5-metre wall and guarded by two bastions, the church fortress stands on the highest point of the village, a hill called “Crow's Nest”. In its courtyard stands a 14th-century Late Gothic church with net vaulting; its chalice-shaped stone pulpit is regarded as the sixth oldest in Transylvania.

    Reformed Fortified Church – Sepsiszentgyörgy

It probably acquired its present Late Gothic form in 1547, at the expense of its patron Pál Daczó. It was once surrounded by two walls and two defensive towers; its churchyard is the resting place of notable figures of the town, and carved wooden grave posts line the side of the walls facing the cemetery.

    Reformed Church – Dálnok

Built on medieval foundations, the church has belonged to the Reformed congregation since the 16th century. Its thick stone walls and simple, austere interior are typical of the village churches of Háromszék. Dálnok is the birthplace of György Dózsa.

The 13th-century church preserves Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque features alike. Its 14th–15th-century frescoes of the St Ladislaus legend are among the best-preserved murals in Transylvania, and some panels of the 103-piece painted coffered ceiling date from 1629.

The first Franciscan friar arrived in Esztelnek in 1677. The church was built between 1710 and 1729, incorporating the old St George's Chapel, and the stone friary was completed in 1750. A St George's Day pilgrimage is held here at the end of April.
